Kogi pays N115m for 15,000 Jamb candidates
Yahaya Bello, Kogi State governor
Governor
Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has approved the payment of N115 million being the
cost of registration fees for 15,033 students in public schools across the state
for the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination organised by the Joint
Admissions and Matriculation Board.
The
state government said this development is in line with its free education
policy of the state.
Honourable
Wemmy Jones, commissioner for education, science and technology, who disclosed
this, said the gesture is a further demonstration of the commitment of the governor
to give all Kogi State children free access to education.
Jones
said the action is a follow up to the earlier payment of about N497 million to
the West African Examination Council to ensure that no student in Kogi State
public schools is made to pay any money before writing any internal or external
examination.
“I
am pleased to announce to parents of Kogi students in public schools that they
do not need to bother themselves about paying for their children’s JAMB
registration fees as the governor has already released funds for that purpose,’’
he said.
“This
is happening a few weeks after the state government paid WAEC registration fees
of all students in public schools to further demonstrate the determination of
the governor to ensure no Kogi student is deprived of the chance to be educated
on account of poverty.”
He
said the state government has strengthened education in the state with better infrastructure,
employment of qualified teachers, broadening technical education and making
education free for all.
A
parent, Adejoh Philip, expressed appreciation to the governor for the gesture,
saying he will be remembered for laying a solid foundation for the renaissance
of education in the state.
