Nigeria Calls for Bids on 12 New Oil Blocks

Nigeria has called for bids from global investors for 12 fresh oil blocks.

Announced by the country's oil regulator during a speech at an esteemed oil conference in Houston, Texas, this initiative aims to tap into Nigeria's vast oil and gas reserves, estimated at 37.5 billion barrels of crude oil and 209.26 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

The nation, keen on transparency and fairness, pledges to conduct the licensing round with integrity, offering equal opportunities to both local and international investors. Gbenga Komolafe, leading the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), emphasized the commitment to a level playing field, addressing concerns from past rounds where lack of transparency led to undeserving companies winning bids.

In addition to the 12 new blocks, Nigeria plans to conclude the licensing for seven deep offshore blocks from a previous mini-bid round, bringing the total to 19 blocks on offer this year. Beyond financial and technical prowess, the regulator highlights the importance of aligning with Nigeria's environmental goals, including reducing carbon emissions, eliminating gas flaring, and safeguarding ecosystems.

As Nigeria, an OPEC member, grapples with declining oil production, exacerbated by challenges in onshore fields, the focus shifts towards offshore prospects, where disruptions are fewer. This strategic move aims to revitalize the sector while balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
