Shell probes smoke incident near Gbaran oil facility in Nigeria
Shell is investigating reports of smoke near its Gbaran Ubie oil and gas facility in Nigeria's coastal Bayelsa state.
A thick plume of smoke billowed into the sky near the oil and gas facility, catching the attention of nearby residents. Reports of explosions echoed through the air, prompting concern and prompting an investigation by Shell, the major oil company operating in the area.
The incident, occurring early on a Tuesday morning, stirred worries among the local community as the sounds of blasts reverberated near the site where pipeline repair works were underway. Despite the alarming nature of the event, Shell assured that it wouldn't immediately disrupt operations at the facility.Gbaran Ubie, a vital cog in Nigeria's energy landscape since its inception in 2010, plays a pivotal role in the Nigeria LNG gas feedstock project, processing a significant volume of gas daily. However, the tranquility of the morning was shattered by the sudden eruption of smoke, prompting Shell to swiftly respond.
"We are actively monitoring reports of smoke detected near our Gbaran Central Processing Facility in Bayelsa State. While the source appears to be external to our facility, we are in close communication with regulatory authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of the surrounding communities," stated a spokesperson for Shell in an email.
As authorities scrambled to ascertain the cause of the smoke, residents recounted their harrowing experiences. Ovie Ogbuku described the earth-shaking sound that sent them fleeing for safety, leaving behind a thick haze of smoke in its wake. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, though the cause of the explosion remained a mystery.
Uche Ede, another resident, expressed relief that despite the chaos, no lives were lost, as the explosion occurred at a safe distance from residential areas. Yet, the incident underscored the challenges faced by oil operations in Nigeria's volatile Niger Delta region, plagued by sabotage, theft, and pipeline vandalism.
In the wake of the smoke's ominous presence, the community awaited answers, hoping for a swift resolution to ensure the safety and security of their environment.
