African ministers approve continental AI strategy

African ICT and communications ministers endorsed the Continental Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy and the African Digital Compact, initiatives aimed at accelerating Africa's digital transformation by leveraging emerging digital technologies.

Over 130 African ministers and experts gathered virtually last week for the 2nd extraordinary session of the specialised technical committee on communication and ICT. The focus of the discussions was the rapid evolution of AI technology and its applications, and how these can drive digital transformation across the continent.

The Continental AI Strategy provides a framework for African governments to use AI to achieve the continent’s development goals and enhance the well-being of its people. It emphasizes the ethical use of AI, mitigation of potential risks, and maximization of opportunities presented by the technology. The strategy outlines key priorities and actions to ensure Africa fully harnesses the benefits of AI.

Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, opened the ministerial session by emphasizing Africa's commitment to adopting new technologies for the well-being of its people. She highlighted the importance of a continent-wide approach to utilizing AI to address Africa’s complex and pressing challenges while minimizing associated risks.

"AI presents tremendous opportunities for us Africans. It is a catalyst for positive transformational change, economic growth, and social progress," said Dr. Abou-Zeid. She stressed the necessity of adapting AI to African realities, ensuring that AI systems reflect the continent's diversity, languages, culture, history, and geographical contexts.

Dr. Abou-Zeid concluded by expressing confidence that the strategy would foster an inclusive AI ecosystem and a competitive African AI market tailored to the continent's unique needs and aspirations. "Approving this strategy will provide a common vision and path to accelerate responsible AI innovation and adoption in Africa," she said.
