NCC seeks 100% compliance on Sim-NIN linkage, issues September deadline
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its goal of achieving 100 per cent compliance in linking Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs) by issuing a firm deadline of September 14, 2024. The NCC reports significant progress, with over 153 million SIMs successfully linked to NINs, representing a compliance rate of 96 per cent, a remarkable improvement from the 69.7% recorded earlier in January 2024.
In a public statement, Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, emphasized the importance of full compliance. He noted that linking all SIM cards to NINs is not only crucial for national security but also serves as a foundational pillar for enhancing trust and security within Nigeria’s growing digital economy. Muoka explained that by verifying mobile users, the policy helps protect against fraud and cybercrime while fostering confidence in digital transactions. This effort is expected to stimulate greater participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services, which will further drive financial inclusion and economic growth in the country.
