Nigerian Navy and Ogun Government set to strengthen security along waterways

The Nigerian Navy and the Ogun State Government are set to hold the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Naval Base and Dockyard at Ode-Omi, in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

Governor Dapo Abiodun announced this during a meeting with Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, at the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor highlighted that this initiative comes at a crucial time when enhanced security along Ogun’s waterways is essential to prevent criminal activities and protect recently discovered hydrocarbon deposits, including petroleum and natural gas, in the area.

According to Governor Abiodun, the establishment of the Naval Base and Dockyard sends a clear signal that Ogun State is committed to fortifying its security infrastructure, making the state even more attractive to investors.

Preparation for the Groundbreaking Ceremony

Governor Abiodun disclosed that work on the access road to the site is nearing completion, with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure ensuring it will be fully accessible by the end of the week.

"We are excited about the groundbreaking ceremony. The access road is being completed, and the site will be fully prepared to showcase the importance we attach to the Nigerian Navy’s presence," the governor stated.

He emphasized that the Naval Base would complement the state’s broader law enforcement architecture, ensuring that Ogun is not a haven for criminal elements.

"The establishment of the base and dockyard will demonstrate that Ogun State is ready to partner with the Navy and solidify its reputation as a secure and investment-friendly state," he added.

Economic Impact

Governor Abiodun noted that the Naval Base and Dockyard would enhance the state’s economic base, complementing major projects such as the Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas Project and the Ogun State Deep Sea Port.

The governor further revealed that the state had allocated 100 hectares of land for the project, waived all associated fees amounting to billions of naira, and forwarded the Certificate of Occupancy to the Nigerian Navy headquarters.

"In collaboration with the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, we identified and secured the site in Ogun Waterside. This project aligns with our vision to harness the economic potential of our riverine areas," he said.

Governor Abiodun also acknowledged Vice Admiral Gambo’s instrumental role in establishing a Naval presence on Tongeji Island, which had previously faced challenges due to its limited infrastructure.

Navy’s Commitment

Rear Admiral Mike Oamen commended Governor Abiodun for his unwavering support for the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies in Ogun State.

"The Ogun State Government has prioritized the security of its residents, and the Nigerian Navy is fully committed to supporting these efforts," Rear Admiral Oamen said.

He assured the governor that the Navy would ensure Ogun’s waterways and maritime spaces are secured from criminal activities.

"The establishment of the Naval Base will align with the Chief of Naval Staff’s strategic plans. The Navy is prepared to work closely with the state government to ensure swift commencement and completion of this project," he added.
