Job loss beckons as Microsoft to Close Africa Development Center in Nigeria
In a move that's stirred concern, Microsoft announced plans to shut its Africa Development Centre located in Nigeria, potentially resulting in job losses, according to a spokesperson on Wednesday.
The centre, situated in Lagos, Nigeria's bustling commercial hub, was established in 2022 as part of Microsoft's ambitious agenda to deliver cutting-edge engineering and innovation solutions across the continent. While Microsoft vows to maintain its presence in Nigeria, promising continued focus and investment in strategic growth sectors, the decision to close the Africa Development Centre signals a shift in their operational strategy.
"Microsoft has made the decision to close the Africa Development Centre in Nigeria, impacting some of our Nigerian-based employees," the spokesperson confirmed, citing organizational adjustments as a regular aspect of business management.
The extent of the impact on the workforce remains uncertain at this time.
Back in December 2022, Microsoft's President Brad Smith hailed Africa's burgeoning talent pool, juxtaposing it against declining population growth elsewhere. At that juncture, Microsoft boasted a workforce of over 200 engineers in Lagos and more than 500 in Nairobi, Kenya, underscoring its commitment to tapping into Africa's vast potential.
